Empowering Young Women: Inspiring Greatness Among Secondary School Students in Ondo City
Female students in secondary schools across Ondo City, Ondo West Local Government, Ondo State, were encouraged to embrace a positive mindset and unwavering determination as they work toward achieving their dreams.
This empowering message was delivered by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Prof. Samuel Akintunde, during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration held on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the institution. Represented by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede, Prof. Akintunde commended the Adeyemi Federal University of Education Female Staff Association (AFUEFSA) for organizing the event. The gathering was a testament to the global movement championing women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Breaking Barriers and Reaching for the Stars
In his address, Prof. Akintunde highlighted the remarkable strides women have made across various fields worldwide. He encouraged female students to never perceive their gender as a limitation but instead harness their innate talents and strive for excellence.
“These days, women are breaking barriers and achieving incredible feats. Right here at AFUED, we have strong examples: our University’s Governing Council is chaired by a woman, and three of our principal officers are women,” he stated.
“Whatever your aspirations, tap into the strength and talents within you. Believe in yourself, stay determined, and keep pushing forward because success is within your reach.”
Celebrating Women’s Achievements and Driving Change
The President of AFUEFSA, Mrs. Olusola Eniola Olagundoye, warmly welcomed attendees and shed light on the significance of the event. With the theme, “Accelerate Action to Unlock Equal Rights, Power, and Opportunities for Women and Girls,” she emphasized the importance of celebrating women’s achievements while continuing the fight for equality.
“As we mark this occasion, we honor the trailblazers who paved the way for us. We recognize the women who defied societal expectations, shattered limitations, and stood tall in the face of adversity,” she remarked.
Acknowledging the challenges still facing women today, Mrs. Olagundoye expressed optimism that with resilience, determination, and collective efforts, progress toward gender equity would be unstoppable.
“This year’s theme calls on every woman and girl to rise to the challenge—believe in your potential, take bold steps toward your goals, and eliminate self-doubt,” she urged.
Empowering the Next Generation of Women Leaders
A thought-provoking lecture was delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Awe Omolara Oluwafunmilola, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at AFUED. She stressed the crucial role of parents in providing equal opportunities for their children, regardless of gender.
“Parents should encourage their daughters to spread their wings and soar,” she stated.
Dr. Awe also advocated for women’s empowerment initiatives, mentorship programs, and access to quality education as key strategies for fostering success among young girls. She highlighted the need for policy reforms to tackle gender-based disparities, including equal pay for equal work, the elimination of gender bias, and stronger laws against gender-based violence.
She further called for increased financial support for women entrepreneurs, greater representation of women in technology-driven fields, and continuous advocacy for women’s rights.
A Gathering of Inspiration and Recognition
The event, held at the prestigious Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium at AFUED, witnessed the participation of students from six notable secondary schools in Ondo City, including:
- St. Helen’s Unity Secondary School
- St. James Catholic Grammar School
- St. Monica’s Girls Grammar School
- Adeyemi Federal University of Education Demonstration Secondary School
- All Saints Grammar School
The students actively engaged in impromptu speeches, showcasing their perspectives on gender equality and leadership.
A special highlight of the occasion was the presentation of an award to Prof. Oyenike Oyinloye by Dr. Martina Ajibefun, a distinguished AFUEFSA member. The event was graced by esteemed guests from diverse professional backgrounds, including:
