AFUED Theatre Arts Department Stages Powerful Convocation Play
As part of its 35th Convocation Ceremony, the Department of Theatre and Creative Arts at Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, delivered a bold and culturally rich performance that captivated its audience and reaffirmed the power of storytelling in education and nation-building.
Held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium, the production featured the play “Many Colours Make a Thunder King” by distinguished playwright, Prof. Femi Osofisan. Rooted in Yoruba cosmology and post-colonial discourse, the play wove together myth, history, music, and political allegory into a moving theatrical experience.
The performance was nothing short of outstanding. The cast brought depth and authenticity to every scene, seamlessly embodying the emotional complexities of their characters. Their chemistry and command of the stage left a lasting impression on the audience, drawing praise from both scholars and dignitaries present.
The narrative followed the journey of the Thunder King—a powerful yet conflicted ruler navigating the intricacies of leadership in a kingdom defined by cultural diversity and internal tension. Through the king’s trials, Osofisan skillfully explored the themes of identity, power, unity, and resistance.
From the vibrant costumes to the evocative sound design, every aspect of the production worked in harmony to elevate the story. The rich blend of color, traditional music, and choreography created an immersive environment that resonated with both the intellect and the emotions.
More than just a performance, the play challenged its audience to reflect on leadership, cultural heritage, and the urgent need for cohesion in a world increasingly divided. Its message—that unity in diversity is not only possible but necessary—was both timely and timeless.
At the conclusion of the play, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, praised the cast and crew for their excellence and encouraged members of the university community to draw inspiration from the themes explored. He emphasized the role of the arts in shaping thought and deepening understanding of the human condition.
Prof. Akintunde also lauded the Department of Theatre and Creative Arts for their innovation, resilience, and unwavering dedication to academic excellence and cultural preservation.
The event drew a distinguished audience, including the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Ganiyat Adeola Yusuf; Council members Prof. Bashir Danlani Sarkindaji, Hon. Adedapo Lam Adesina, and Chief (Hon.) Dr. Prince Nelson John; as well as the Federal Ministry of Education representative, Mrs. J. N. Akpa. Former Provost, Prof. Adeyemi Idowu, was also in attendance, alongside principal officers of the university.
The convocation play stood as a testament to AFUED’s commitment to not just academic excellence, but to cultural relevance, artistic integrity, and national development through the creative arts.
